Implementing the CAA Act has also launched an online portal through which applications can be filed

Citizenship Amendment Act: The Modi government implemented the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) across the country on Monday i.e. March 11, 2024 and announced the notification of its rules. After this, when there was a festive atmosphere among the common people across the country, some Islamic fundamentalists tried to spoil the atmosphere. Under this law, minorities (Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Christians, Buddhists and Parsis) who suffered persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan will get permanent Indian citizenship.

CAA : This Act is for people who were displaced and came to India till December 31, 2014.

In implementation of this Act of 2019 an online portal has also been released using which applications can be filed. This step has been taken before the implementation of the code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections.
Refugees seeking Indian citizenship should visit the website https://indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in/. The Union Home Ministry has clarified that, for this, all the details will be accepted completely through online mode.

Let us first know what documents you need to apply?

  • Copy of passport issued by the Governments of Pakistan, Afghanistan or Bangladesh
  • Registration Certificate or Residence Permit issued by FRRO (Foreign Regional Registration Officer) or FRO (Foreign Registration Officer)
  • Birth certificate issued by the administration of Pakistan, Afghanistan or Bangladesh
  • Educational certificates issued by schools and colleges in these three countries
  • Any type of identity card issued by the governments or government agencies of these countries
  • Any government license or certificate issued in any of these three countries
  • Documents relating to land, property or rent thereon
  • Any document showing that the applicant’s parents, grandparents or great-grandparents were citizens of Pakistan, Afghanistan or Bangladesh
  • Any government document showing that the applicant is a citizen of these three countries

The applicant must have the following documents to show that he has taken asylum in India before December 31, 2014

  • Copy of visa or immigration stamp issued on arrival in India
  • Residence permit or registration certificate issued by FRRO or FRO
  • Slip released by Census Department
  • Ration Card issued in India
  • Any official letter issued by the government or court
  • Birth certificate made in India
  • Documents relating to land, property or rent in India
  • PAN card with date of issue
  • Any document issued by local authorities or public representatives
  • Passbook issued by public-private banks or post offices
  • Insurance policy details in the applicant’s name in India
  • Electricity connection or other utility bill receipt and other documents bearing the applicant’s name
  • Applicant’s name in court or tribunal process documents
  • Documents related to EPF/Pension in India, showing that the applicant was working in India
  • Documents related to ESIC (State Insurance Corporation).
  • School Leaving Certificate issued in India
  • Certificate issued by school-college-university or other educational agencies
  • Trade license granted to the applicant by the municipality
  • Marriage certificate

This website is named ‘Indian Citizenship Online Portal’. Several options are provided to apply for citizenship. An alternative to CAA is given below. A link has been provided to apply through CAA 2019. By clicking on which you will be asked for email id or phone number. After that the rest of the details for filling the form will open in front of you. In this you have to fill all the details asked and also upload the necessary documents.

This work can also be done through a mobile application called CAA-2019. Form will be checked by district level committee for filling and further process will be informed through email-SMS. They will then be administered the oath of allegiance. On entering the number-email on the online portal, an OTP will be generated, which after submission will open the remaining details of the form. An application can be submitted after just answering a few simple questions.
